ROLE SUMMARY The Circulating Nurse is a Registered Nurse who provides quality patient care using the nursing process, the medical plan of care, and organizational policies. The Circulating Nurse reports to the OR Coordinator and the Clinical Nurse Manager.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provides communication between team members in the surgical field and persons outside the operating room. Informs charge nurse of case progress and reports any unusual circumstances. 2. Assists in transporting patient from pre-operative area to operating room after greeting patient, introducing self, identifying patient, and interviewing the patient for pertinent information. Transports patient with anesthesiologist to the recovery room and completes operative record by recording the time the procedure concluded. Gives a complete report of the patient’s status to the PACU nurse assuming care. 3. Reviews preoperative charts to ensure all necessary paperwork are available for surgery. 4. Assists anesthesiologist in transferring patient onto operating table, applying appropriate safety restraints. The Circulating Nurse never leaves the patient unattended. Assists anesthesiologist in applying EKG leads and blood pressure cuff, as needed. Assists anesthesiologist during anesthesia induction and crucial periods during the operative procedure. Is available to assist anesthesiologist with extubation. 5. Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts (as appropriate) with the scrub tech/nurse; records count, and signs immediately. May start intravenous lines in accordance with Center standards. Completes operative record, including logging implants in Implant Log Book. Does sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the scrub tech/nurse at correct times during procedure. 6. Anticipates needs of surgical team and provides needed items to sterile field. Monitors the sterile field during surgical procedures. 7. Opens dressings onto sterile field after final count is completed. Applies tape to dressing and makes certain patient is clean before leaving operating room.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Maintains knowledge of drugs used and is able to administer drugs safely and accurately whenever required to do so. Documents narcotic dispensing in the Narcotic Log Book.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership and professional skills according to Standards of Care.
  • Ability to assess a patient’s condition, formulate plan of care, select appropriate interventions, evaluate patient’s response to plan of care and to explain to patient/family about this process.
  • Ability to assess, evaluate, explain, teach, problem solve using critical thinking; and perform calculations.
  • Demonstrates excellent professional/clinical skills and utilization of the Nursing process of direct and indirect patient care which includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care to meet patient needs and improve patient outcomes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Current licensure in this state as a Registered Nurse.
  • Progressive work experience in the OR of no less than one year.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • ACLS certification preferred within six (6) months of date of hire. PALS certification preferred within one (1) year of date of hire
